Elders Ministry

Elders Home

Our Elders home is aimed mainly at the dear elders who come from under priviledged backgrounds…it has the capacity to hold 12 elders, and 10 are already occupying the place. This facility would be open to Christian’s as a priority, especially those who are destitute or alienated from their families, and also to non Christians according to availability.

Whilst we charge a monthly fee from residents, most of them cannot afford to pay this and are supported by the Church. While the Church has placed its faith in the Lord to continue with this ministry we look forward to support from interested people.

The current home is sparse in terms of facilities with often a curtain or a temporary partition dividing the residents. Facilities such as hot water needed for the elderly are yet to be obtained. Despite these limitations this residence has been a blessing to residents.

You could support the elders home by

1. Giving a meal
2. Cleaning the Garden and other chores
3. Taking a few elders our for limited number of hours

The following larger projects too can be undertaken

Upgrading premises
The project is to upgrade the current premises and build an adjoining structure on land newly purchased to afford privacy to the caregivers family, thereby enhancing the care given by them while increasing the capacity of the elders who could be accommodated to 20.

New vehicle
Purchase of vehicle to transport these elders and to take them for medical care when needed.

"As Sri Lanka is experiencing a major demographic shift in the age pyramid a proportion of the population over 60 years has dramatically increased from 5.3 in 1953 to 10.8 per cent in 2003, making Sri Lanka the fastest ageing population among the developing nations. ‘ This statement extracted from the Sunday Observer of June, 2007 confirms the observations made by sociologist in the recent past. According to Prof. W, Indrala De Silva Head of Department of Demography University of Colombo. “ by the year 2025, one out of four persons will be elderly. Nearly 25 per cent of the population will be elderly. It is very rapid process in Sri Lanka. By 2001, Sri Lanka had only 2 million elderly people and this will be doubled by 2001. Compared to SAARC countries, our process of aging is very rapid’ The above statistics still not capture the alienation that is felt by the elderly in our society. With increasing migration to the west by those seeking refuge from the war, and the never ending exodus of workers to the Middle East, the elderly are all too often left to fend for themselves in the evening of their life. The leadership of the People’s Church has felt the need to position its ministry so that we could be God’s hand extended to this vulnerable group. An important part of this preparation is the ‘Elders Residence".
